PG Seminar on three new Criminal Laws – 14.7.2024

The following are the salient points of the Petition Group Seminar held on 14.7.2024, Sunday, between 10.30 am to 1.30 pm at Don Bosco School, Matunga East, Mumbai – 19.

  1. The hall was jam-packed with participants despite the heavy rains in Mumbai and MMR.
  2. After light snacks of delicious idli-vada-chutney of the Matunga’s famous Mani’s Hotel we began the Seminar at about 10:45 am.
  3. The honourable Speakers were welcomed with a bouquet. Also the audience (which comprised of Lawyers, Law students, Legal experts, activists and the aggrieved citizens.)
  4. The objectives for forming the movement called “Petition Group” was explained to the speakers and new-comers in the audience. Also the stalwarts of the Petition Group (Mr K V J Rao, Mr Sanjay Kurhade, Mr Kamlakar Shetty, Mr Shivnarayan Sharma, Ms Sonika Krantiveer) were introduced to the Speakers.
  5. The first speaker was Adv. Vinod Sampat. He spoke for about 40 mins on how best to use the techniques & alternate laws (other than CHS Act) to get CHS related grievances redressed. He explained in a very humorous manner so it sunk in very well in everyone’s mind.
  6. After a short break the Seminar resumed by Adv. Mahesh Vaswani informing in detail the new criminal laws – Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita, Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita and Bhartiya Sakshya Adhiniyam which came into effect from 1.7.2024. He very well explained in lucid language how the new criminal laws would be beneficial to common citizens in getting reduced crime rate, better and speedier investigation process and justice in Court for the victims.
  7. By his talk Adv. Mahesh Vaswani dispelled the strong apprehensions & misgivings of the participants on the real purpose of the Central Govt to repeal the 160 years old criminal laws.
  8. Adv. Vinod Sampat and Adv. Mahesh Vaswani patiently answered queries from participants.
  9. The honourable speakers readily agreed to give legal guidance to PG group members whenever needed and also take forward the issue in Courts, if needed.
  10. At the end of the Seminar Mr. Sunny Fernandes gave a Vote of Thanks to the esteemed speakers for selflessly devoting their leisure time on a Sunday morning to educate us common citizens on the important current laws of the land, the audience and the volunteers – Mr Chetan Trivedi, Mr Neeraj Pattath, Mr Ganesh Undale, Mr Sattar Kapadia, Mr Jaypal Shetty and others.

  12. It was a morning well spent by all the participants and we are confident that the knowledge gained at today’s Seminar would go a long way in empowering them to get transparency, accountability, good governance and strengthen our Democracy.
